Published · updated

Facts read on 21 and 22 October 2026. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central bank, says trading in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is not permitted in Nepal. This page has no sign-up button and no code. We make no legal ruling; we quote the central bank and the exchanges.

What Nepal Rastra Bank says (13 November 2020)

NRB published a statement titled “नेपालमा Bitcoin लगायतका Cryptocurrency हरुको कारोबार गर्न पाइन्छ/पाइदैन ?”. Its answer, in the original Nepali:

नेपालमा Bitcoin लगायतका Cryptocurrency हरुको कारोबार गर्न पाइँदैन । यस्तो कारोबार गर्नु कानुनतः अवैध हो ।

Our translation: “In Nepal, trading in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is not permitted. Such trading is illegal under the law.” The date comes from the page metadata; the visible text carries no date. The statement does not name a law, and we do not add one.

Later NRB notice (3 April 2023)

NRB repeated its position in a notice dated 3 April 2023 (Nepali date 2079/12/20), titled “Cryptocurrency, Network Marketing तथा Hyper Fund कारोबार गैरकानूनी रहेको सम्बन्धी सूचना”. Our translation of the title: “Notice that Cryptocurrency, Network Marketing and Hyper Fund transactions are illegal”. The same date carries a second notice, “क्रिप्टोकरेन्सीसम्बन्धी जोखिम विश्लेषण” (our translation: “Risk analysis related to cryptocurrency”). We quote only the titles and the date, and we do not quote the body of the notices. We have not established whether NRB has published any later cryptocurrency notice, so this page does not claim that these are the latest.

Does Binance list Nepal?

Two Binance documents answer two different questions. Nepal is not named in Binance’s List of Prohibited Countries, “Updated - 5 January 2026”. Separately, Binance lists Nepal as “Available” in its list of countries and regions where the Binance App is supported, “updated on August 18, 2026”. Binance lists Nepal as a region where its app is supported. That is a statement about the app, not about Nepali law.

Other exchanges: OKX lists Nepal as restricted

OKX, in its Risk & Compliance Disclosure (Last Updated 8 July 2026), names Nepal among its Restricted Locations. Bybit’s list of service restricted countries, last updated 16 October 2026, does not name Nepal. The NRB statement is about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in general, so a missing name on an exchange list does not change it.

An exchange list says where the exchange chooses to offer its service. It does not say what a national regulator allows. For Nepal the two sources point in different directions: Binance lists the app as available, and NRB says trading is not permitted. We do not say Binance is banned in Nepal, because Binance does not say so. We say what NRB says. This page does not cover enforcement cases or reports of frozen accounts.

Why there is no sign-up button here

We show a sign-up link only where our evidence covers the country and the exchange is available there. For Nepal the central bank statement says trading is not permitted, so there is no button and no code for any exchange. We give no steps for buying crypto in Nepal. Do not use a false country or someone else’s identity to get around a check or restriction.
